Expanding growers’ choice of plant disease management options can promote suboptimal social outcomes

چکیده

Previous models of growers' decision-making during epidemics have unrealistically limited disease management choices to just two options. Here, we expand previous game-theoretic grower include three control options: a crop that is tolerant, resistant or susceptible disease. Using tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) as case study, investigate how growers can be incentivized use different options achieve socially optimal outcomes. To do this, consider the efforts ‘social planner’ who moderates price crops. We find subsidizing tolerant costs social planner more in subsidies, its encourages selfishness and widespread adoption. Subsidizing crop, however, provides benefits by reducing prevalence across community growers, including those not control, number subsidies required from planner. then Gini coefficients measure equitability each subsidization scheme. This study highlights behaviour altered using promote outcomes epidemics.

Expanding “Choice” in School Choice

Truthful revelation of preferences has emerged as a desideratum in the design of school choice programs. Gale-Shapley’s deferred acceptance mechanism is strategy-proof for students but limits their ability to communicate their preference intensities. This results in ex-ante inefficiency when ties at school preferences are broken randomly. We propose a variant of deferred acceptance mechanism wh...

Suboptimal choice behavior by pigeons.

Contrary to the law of effect and optimal foraging theory, pigeons show suboptimal choice behavior by choosing an alternative that provides 20% reinforcement over another that provides 50% reinforcement. They choose the 20% reinforcement alternative--in which 20% of the time, that choice results in a stimulus that always predicts reinforcement, and 80% of the time, it results in another stimulu...

Expanding Integrated Vector Management to promote healthy environments.

Integrated Vector Management (IVM) strategies are intended to protect communities from pathogen transmission by arthropods. These strategies target multiple vectors and different ecological and socioeconomic settings, but the aggregate benefits of IVM are limited by the narrow focus of its approach; IVM strategies aim only to control arthropod vectors. We argue that IVM should encompass environ...

Intermittent Exotropia: Management Options and Surgical Outcomes

Background: This paper reflects an effort to recreate a modern analysis of a 1985 study on surgical outcomes of intermittent exotropia. Post-surgical results are reported as functional, motor, cosmetic, and unsuccessful. Modern optometric approaches to management of intermittent exotropia are also discussed. Methods: A literature review of 17 acceptable papers (dating from 1990-2011) on the out...
